– Step 0 (SAM tool selection): If your environment has a good Active Directory infrastructure, all computers joined to that AD domain, and you have the Domain Admin right as well as the ability to control the host firewalls on all computers, then you can use the free Microsoft MAP toolkit.
Otherwise, you can use the “SoftwareONE-VN-SAM-tool” mentioned below on each and every computers (just 2 minutes on each computers).
Other great commercial tools include Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager (SCCM) or Microsoft Intune.
If you need more control and visibility, we can provide you with professional SAM tools such as Snow or Flexera.
– Step 1 (Software Inventory report): Collect the list of all computers, hardware configuration as well as the list of installed software on all computers, together with product keys (last 5 characters only, if using the manual “SoftwareONE-VN-SAM-tool“).
This step can be done automatically using the SAM tool chosen in the Step 0, or manually in the "SAM trial" section below.
A sample report for the SAM Step 1 can be downloaded here.
– Step 2 (License Inventory report): Collect license information: Windows OEM stickers, license info on the Microsoft website, license purchase contracts, etc…
– Step 3 (Effective License Position (ELP) report): Compare the reports of the Step 1 and the Step 2 above,
and generate the “Effective License Position” report for all products: Under-licensed, fully compliant, or over-licensed and how many
(after applying licensing rules such as qualified base OS, downgrade rights, virtualization rights, license allocation, processor core-factor, etc…)
A sample report for the SAM Step 3 can be downloaded here.
We can then also help you with license optimization recommendation.
